Flowers of the month (September, 2018)

Hi, this is Shire. Thank you very much for coming to my room again! This “Flowers of the month” series are written in both English & Japanese at the same time since there are many images I would like you all enjoy at once.

Let’s start my monthly flower arrangement♬

September, 2018 Main color: Pink ; Birth stone: Sapphire

【Flowers for the arrangement】 Cosmos,  Celosia, Gerbera, Cornflower

Cosmos : I did use white ones last September, but 2 colors in this time (pink and red-ish pink) . This is the flower to remind us of the beginning of fall which you may start seeing them at your neighborhood in these day. There are many different styles & species, but I use the most common type in this arrangement. The word Cosmos in Greek, “kosmos” means orderly, beautiful, and ornamental. The flower’s fragrance and vibrant colors give it the attributes of peacefulness, wholeness, and modesty. The typical meaning of this flower is ‘love flower’.

Celosia : Celosia comes from the Greek word ‘kelos’, meaning burned; apparently referring to the look of the brightly colored flowers in some species. Species are commonly known as woolflowers, or, if the flower heads are crested by fasciation, cockscombs. The ones I use in this time is Celosia spicata flamingo which is also known as “wheat Celosia.”

The meanings of this flower include “affection, singularity, silliness.” The word singularity is the symbol for Celosia which this flower used not have particular meaning.

These images can give you a good idea how tall/log the stem of the flower as well as how they can be used in a flower arrangement. For my arrangement in this time, I do use a bunch of them around (behind) cosmos flowers which I hope you will feel like being in the middle of a field of flowers.

Gerbera : I think this is the as popular flower as rose for flower arrangements (Actually, the fifth most popular flower in the world behind the rose, carnations, chrysanthemum, and tulip). It was discovered in 1884 near Barberton, South Africa. While the flower’s scientific name, Gerbera jamesonii, recollects the name of its founder, the meaning of its common name draws from German naturalist Traugott Gerber. Breeding programs that began in England in 1890 enhanced the flower’s quality and color variations (from ProFlowers).

As you see the above images, I do use smaller flowers with pale pink color ones which give a beautiful pink contrast between 2 other pink flowers: Cosmos and Celosia.

Cornflower (Bachelor’s button) : I really wanted to use this flower as the birth stone flower of September. As some of you know that the really pure blue sapphire is called “cornflower blue.” Sapphires generally have undertones of green or purple, while a cornflower blue sapphire is said to be closer to “true” blue, along with excellent tone and saturation to highlight the purity of the color (from ID). Centaurea cyanus, commonly known as cornflower or bachelor’s button, is an annual flowering plant in the family Asteraceae, native to Europe. In the past it often grew as a weed in cornfields (in the broad sense of “corn”, referring to grains, such as wheat, barley, rye, or oats), hence its name (from Wikipedia). Cornflower usually blooms during Spring to Summer so that I picked ones in Shamballa (currently in May) as well as some areas in Northern Europe.

The blue cornflower was one of the national symbols of Germany. This is partly due to the story that when Queen Louise of Prussia was fleeing Berlin and pursued by Napoleon’s forces, she hid her children in a field of cornflowers and kept them quiet by weaving wreaths for them from the flowers. The flower thus became identified with Prussia, not least because it was the same color as the Prussian military uniform. After the unification of Germany in 1871, it went on to become a symbol of the country as a whole (from Wikipedia).

Celosia definitely adds sweetness & cute atmosphere to a floral arrangement.

【Flower Vase】Yep. The basket. I use the large one (w=80cm/2.6ft, h+d=30~40cm/1~1.3ft) to fill with flowers.

I use a glass vase inserted in this basket which is filled with water & fertilizer (also a sponge to settle those thin stems). This is not the group planting arrangement.

You should be able to see a much larger scale of flowers, lol. Cosmos & Celosias are supposed to be exuberant and almost overflowing from the basket. Meanwhile the Gerberas (it might be hard to identify by this image though) and Cornflowers give the tightness to the arrangement. Hopefully, you will feel the sweet-tender atmosphere of the entrance of this new season, autumn.

Please visit the imaginary school in Shamballa so that you will be able to see & smell the beautiful flowers💖
