Flowers of the month (August, 2018)

Hi, this is Shire. Thank you very much for coming to my room again! This “Flowers of the month” series are written in both English & Japanese at the same time since there are many images I would like you all enjoy at once.

Let’s start my monthly flower arrangement♬

August, 2018 Main color: Blue & White ; Birth stone: Peridot

【Flowers for the arrangement】 Gladiolus,  Agapanthus, Pom pom mum

Gladiolus : Gladiolus produce elegant, 3-foot flower spikes with orchid-like blooms. It is sometimes called the ‘sword lily’, but is usually called by its generic name (plural gladioli). These flowers are variously colored, ranging from pink to reddish or light purple with white, contrasting markings, or white to cream or orange to red (from Wikipedia). In this time, I do pick the nicely bloomed white & blue ones to create the summer sky & ocean atmosphere and the color contrast. The blue color gladiolus is not so common, but it has a range between more neon-blue to blue-purple. I actually use the ones from the below image right (not neon-blue).

Agapanthus : The name is derived from scientific Greek: αγάπη (agape – “love”), άνθος (anthos – “flower”). Some species of Agapanthus are commonly known as lily of the Nile (or African lily in the UK), although they are not lilies and all of the species are native to Southern Africa (South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique) though some have become naturalized in scattered places around the world (Australia, Great Britain, Mexico, Ethiopia, Jamaica, etc.) (from Wikipedia). I love seeing this flower all over my neighborhood during summertime… now! As for the arrangement, I use pure white & blue (not purple) ones as well as bi-color ones called “Queen Mum (You can see the image below).” They are arranged like a “wave” shape from the left side of gladiolus which hopefully gives you a sea breeze type of atmosphere.

Pom pom mum : Originally known as the chusan daisy in China before its introduction to Versailles in 1847, the little button chrysanthemum’s (Dendranthema x grandiflorum) new name came from the similarity to the pompoms on the hats of French sailors. Pompom chrysanthemums, also commonly called button mums, produce masses of small, round blooms in a variety of different colors (from SF Gate). This particular green mum has the birth stone, peridot… its color and the atmosphere which gives a brilliant accent to the blue-white arrangement in this time. The flower usually blooms between September and November, but it is available fairly all year long since it is really a popular flower to support many different types of floral arrangements.

【Flower Vase】I think this is one of my favorite types of the flower vase for the series. The actual vase is definitely taller (about 70cm = 2’2″), darker brown with a mat finish.

【Display Image】Here is a few images of color & style for your reference. First of all, these 2 sample images for the gladiolus, white & green color arrangements.

As you see, gladiolus gives you a smart & clean atmosphere with the tall stem. The balance of the display especially in the right side image can be a good example of the floweriness at the left side of the arrangement.

*Arrangement with white agapanthus*

This is an example of the agapanthus spiral-ish arrangement which you can see the beautiful flow at the right side. I do make the flow at the left side in my arrangement.

I’m getting a little bit used to draw this on iPad, but… I definitely need to practice more :/

Gladiolus flowers are placed more towards right side instead of the center. As you see, agapanthus spirals make the flow from the top-left and are supposed to flourish at the left to center. Green mums are actually not that too closely gathered but are more studded between agapanthus flowers.

The blue colors of gladiolus and agapanthus are slightly different so that I hope you will enjoy the blue contrast and gradation.

Please visit the imaginary school in Shamballa so that you will be able to see & smell the beautiful flowers💖
